The fact you’re no longer rocking a beautiful leather satchel doesn’t mean your daddy-daycare diaper bag has to be a statement in dagginess.
Our grandfathers carried Gladstone bags, our fathers, briefcases. We became the backpack/messenger bag/satchel generation, mixing form and functionality.
But let’s be frank, with all these bags about the most you ever carried around was your wallet, sunnies and maybe a couple of sheets of paper from work you promised yourself you’d read over dinner but instead went to the pub.
As you soon realise, however, most of these bags are utterly useless once you become a father. A young dad needs the sort of bag women are more accustomed to owning – multi-function, multi-compartment and seriously durable.
As becomes clear very quickly, leaving the house with a newborn or infant is a precision exercise where you will seriously rue forgetting any of the essentials once you’re on the road. That means ensuring nappies, dummies, wipes, bibs, rompers, bottles, rusks, replacement nappies, replacement rompers, replacement everything, is neatly packed before you close the door behind you.
A handful of diaper bags for dad up to this momentous task, specifically directed at new dads have cropped up in recent years. Here’s our pick of six we rate:
Skip Hop Dash Signature MessengerA Popular bag from a popular international brand which manages to semi-disguise the fact you’ve abandoned the cool accessories of your single, child-free days because it takes the form of a courier’s messenger bag. But inside, there are 11 sizeable pockets for you to prioritise the aforementioned baby stuff into, a zippered compartment for your wallet and other adult essentials, and magnetic closures. Includes Skip Hop’s patented Shuttle Clips which allow you to convert it from a shoulder bag into a stroller bag. Pictured is the Heather Grey bag (also Black and Chevron).
Diaper Dude Messenger Diaper Bag for DadsAs above, a dad bag that offers a fashionable form as much as a purely functional life organiser. Grey with distinctive orange zippers, this durable polyester and nylon messenger-style bag sports an ergonomic, across-the-chest design with a wide, adjustable padded strap; a large main compartment for the bulkier items; three exterior, zip-closed pockets and an elasticised bottle pocket on its side. No one ever need to know it’s full of junior’s gear.
Lekebaby Diaper Bag BackpackAnother bag in the ‘can-it-really-be-a-baby-bag?’ category. The soft faux-leather highlights disguise this backpack as a fashion item. Inside it’s surprisingly large, with more than 10 compartments, as well as extra external side pockets, one with a zipper and others elasticised for quick access. One Amazon reviewer says: “I can easily fit 20-30 diapers, a pack of wipes, a changing pad cover, a medicinal pouch, spoons, hand sanitizer and more on just the inside.”
Baby Boom Connect & Go XLR8 Diaper BagA Backpack-style dad bag with the added advantage of including a rechargeable 7800mah power-pack to keep your smartphone, tablet and other devices at an upper percentage of charge while you’re out and about. There’s a Bluetooth speaker for impromptu entertainment of baby at the park, as well as a built-in LED light inside the bag that makes finding dummies and keys and clips a lot easier. Very cool. There are over 20 pockets and compartments inside for all the baby paraphernalia and dedicated spots for phones, wires and more.
Ferlin Diaper BackpackStylish, contemporary looking backpack which can legitimately double as both nappy bag and office laptop bag. Extra padding on the shoulder straps provides superior comfort. There’s also an included changing pad and a discreet pocket on the side that doubles as a wipe dispenser.
Fisher-Price FastFinder Deluxe Diaper Bag For DadMore function than fashion in this laptop-type bag from a brand more renowned for kids’ toys, with a wallet-style interior for baby food, snacks, bottles, nappies and more. It also includes a changing pad, an adjustable strap and – like the Ferlin above – an easy-reach wipes dispenser.
