It has been a busy year for Harry and Meghan, marrying in May after announcing their engagement 6 months earlier in November. Since the couple officiated their relationship, there has been much speculation about whether or not they planned to start a family.
On the day they announced their engagement, the couple sat with the BBC for their first joint public interview. When the interviewer asked, “Children?” Harry responded good-naturedly with a chuckle: “Not currently no,” and then added, “one step at a time and hopefully we’ll start a family in the near future.”
The British royal touched on fatherhood in his appearance on Bryony Gordon’s Mad World podcast in 2017. He stated, “Of course, I would love to have kids,” while disclosing his hope of being a good father.
“I think the key to that is to be able to grow up, but also be able to stay in touch with your childhood side,” he said.
“If that means going to someone’s house, sitting there and playing PlayStation, kicking the a** of their son on CounterStrike, or Halo, or whatever it is, then I’ll try and do that.”
It seems like sound advice, given that the Prince already has plenty of experience being around kids through his charity work and as uncle to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and most recently Louis. In March 2016, he told People (via Daily Mail) how he wishes to always play a unique role in his niece’s and nephew’s lives: “George and Charlotte will grow up and hopefully find me to be the fun uncle. I always want to be the fun uncle.”
Harry and Meghan’s baby will be seventh in line for the throne behind Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and Prince Harry. He or she will be the Queen and Prince Philip’s eighth great-grandchild.
